The investment seeks to generate current income while maintaining a low degree of share price fluctuation. The fund invests at least 80% of its net assets (plus borrowing for investment purposes) in fixed-income securities whose principal and interest payments are guaranteed by the U.S. government. In addition, the dollar-weighted average portfolio maturity of the fund, under normal circumstances, is expected to be three years or less. These investments may include U.S. Treasury securities, securities issued by U.S. government agencies and instrumentalities.
The investment seeks the realization over a period of years of the highest yield consistent with relatively low price volatility. The fund invests in high quality debt securities with short- and intermediate-term maturities, including U.S. government and agency obligations, high quality corporate obligations, and high quality commercial paper and other money market instruments. The adviser typically distributes the fund's investments in varying amounts among securities maturing in up to six or seven years from the time of purchase, but occasionally may purchase securities maturing in up to 15 years.
The investment seeks a high level of current income in a manner consistent with preserving principal. The fund invests at least 80% of assets in U.S. government securities and repurchase agreements for those securities. It invests in U.S. government securities issued by entities that are chartered or sponsored by Congress but whose securities are neither issued nor guaranteed by the U.S. Treasury. The fund invests in instruments related to U.S. government securities. It normally maintains a dollar-weighted average maturity between two and five years.
