The investment seeks a high level of interest income that is exempt from federal income tax and is not a tax preference item for purposes of the federal alternative minimum tax. Under normal circumstances, at least 80% of the fund's net assets (plus any borrowings for investment purposes) will be invested in municipal securities that pay interest that is exempt from federal income tax and is not a Tax Preference Item. However, the fund typically attempts to invest all of its assets in such securities. The fund diversifies its assets among municipal bonds and securities of different states, municipalities, and U.S. territories.

The investment seeks to replicate as closely as possible, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the Bloomberg Barclays AMT-Free Intermediate Continuous Municipal Index. The fund normally invests at least 80% of its total assets in fixed income securities that comprise the index. The index is comprised of publicly traded municipal bonds that cover the U.S. dollar denominated intermediate term tax-exempt bond market.
