The investment seeks to provide current income exempt from regular federal income tax and California state personal income taxes while seeking to preserve capital and liquidity. Under normal circumstances, the fund invests at least 80% of its net assets (plus borrowings for investment purposes) in municipal instruments the income from which is exempt from both federal and California state income taxes, which includes municipal instruments of obligors located outside of the State of California so long as such securities are exempt from both federal and California state income taxes. The fund is non-diversified.

It invests in California municipal and other debt securities with an emphasis on high-yield securities. A high-yield security is one that has been rated below investment-grade, or determined by the investment advisor to be of similar quality. The portfolio managers also may buy unrated securities if they determine such securities meet the investment objectives of the fund. The fund is non-diversified.
