The investment seeks to provide as high a level of current income as is consistent with the preservation of capital. The fund normally invests at least 80% of its assets in bonds and other debt securities. It invests a majority of its assets in debt securities rated A3 or better or A- or better. The fund invests in debt securities with a wide range of maturities. It may invest in debt securities and mortgage-backed securities issued by government-sponsored entities and federal agencies and instrumentalities that are not backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.

The manager uses the Barclays® U.S. Universal Bond Index as a guide in allocating assets across the investment-grade, high yield, and emerging market asset classes. It invests up to 20% of assets in lower-quality debt securities (those of less than investment-grade quality, also referred to as high yield debt securities or junk bonds).
