The investment seeks long-term growth of capital.
The fund invests, under normal circumstances, at least 80% of its net assets plus any borrowings for investment purposes (measured at the time of purchase) ("Net Assets") in a diversified portfolio of equity investments in emerging country issuers. Currently, emerging countries include, among others, Central and South American, African, Asian and Eastern European countries. Under normal circumstances, it will not invest more than 35% of its Net Assets in securities of issuers in any one emerging country.
The investment seeks to provide long-term capital appreciation along with some current income; the fund seeks to mitigate adverse volatility in returns as a secondary objective.
Normally, the fund seeks to achieve its investment objective by investing at least 80% of its total assets in dividend-paying common stocks, preferred stocks, convertible securities, and debt obligations of foreign companies, foreign governments and their agencies, where "total assets" means net assets, plus the amount of any borrowings for investment purposes. The fund can invest without constraint in the securities of companies located in developing countries.
